Hi, all.

My name's Phil.

I live in South Oxfordshire, and have loved the Shadows and similar since an early age (I'm nearly 50 now).

During the late 70's and early 80's, a friend and I did some DJ'ing...playing proper old 50's and 60's Rock 'n' Roll and Rockabilly. I met a band called 'The Rockin' Shades' cool.gif and became friends with them all, especially their lead guitarist, Colin Pryce-Jones, who now leads a great London band caled 'The Rapiers' (you may have heard of them).

Colin inspired me, and I bought a HORRIBLE Tele copy (with a bigsby-type whammy, and a 2-inch action!). I could read music, slowly, and had a Shadows song book. I wrote every note above the stave, and made a diagram of a guitar neck, with the notes printed on it...by 4 O'Clock in the morning, I could manage 90% of Apache!

Over the years I've owned a number of guitars...mainly Strat copies (Kimbara, Marlin, Encore etc.) My prize posession was a genuine 60's Burns Marvin (Yes, a REAL one), which used to belong to Mr. Pryce-Jones...some little bas**rd stole it, and the local fuzz didn't give a damn...nor did my insurance company!

I currently have a black, Korean, Squier Strat, which I have had for some 15 years or so. Unfortunately, Shortly after I bought it, I caught my left (fretting) hand in the fan of my car, which has left me with scarring (I nearly lost two fingers),which makes it difficult to bend my fingers properly, so I can't play anywhere near as well as I could. sad.gif

I hope to meet you soon, at the Berkshire Club. I may bring my Strat along, but if I do play, please bear with me...I am very out of practice.

All the best, and keep on rockin'

Phil

Hi there, Phil

Glad you found you way to the forum and am so looking forward to meeting you on Tuesday evening at the Berks club at Langley. Please don't worry about your playing - no matter how bad you think it is, you haven't heard ME yet! biggrin.gif

We have a really good crowd there and Tuesday promises to be an absolutely cracking evening. See you there!

Cheers
Chris

P.S. If you intend playing with the band (the recommended route) please let me know if there are any numbers you're going to play which could be considered a little out of the ordinary, so that we have time to learn 'em for you before the event?

Thanks for all the replies and encouragement.

I'm hoping to get down there on Tuesday...problem is, it's 2 days before pay day, and money's a little tight at the moment. We'll see how it goes.

My main reason for coming is, that I feel there's only so far I can get with Tab charts and by ear...sometimes someone just has to tell and show you how to do it!

I have been considering taking up Bass, because of my fat, knackered fingers. I'm always open and willing to learn. I must admit, that having seen some of the videos posted here, I'm almost embarassed to admit to having ever picked up a guitar...there is some great talent here!

Hope to see and meet you soon.

Phil

I was in exactly the same position at the beginning of this year when I first approached the Berkshire club and I only knew one tune all the way through!

But I guarantee you could not meet a nicer bunch of folks and very soon you will be hooked and a regular at Langley.

Looking forward to meeting you on Tuesday.

Dave
